Abstract
Galileo is one of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) currently being developed by European Space Agency (ESA) under the contract with European Union (EU), to deliver a real-time positioning and timing service to various user groups.
The range of GNSS applications has been being expanded for last two decades due to the emergence of new and unexpected applications relying on GNSS-based positioning/timing technology. GNSS is becoming a core necessarily part of large scale systems, such as airport, maritime, power grid system, banking system, communication network system, etc.
In this presentation, the recent status of satellite navigation system development as well as R&D trends for next generation are presented focusing on European Galileo development history. First, an overview on the EU Galileo in terms of satellites, ground segment, service and signals is presented. Second, Galileo’s recent development status for last five years is summarized. Based on these, GNSS trends are analysed for future purposes.
